Cancer Survivor Credits Family, Support and Doctors for Survival

June 20, 2016

MODESTO, Calif. – June 20, 2016 – High school sweethearts Steve and Barbara Bain have been married for almost 50 years. Like most men, Steve didn’t like going to the doctor, but Barbara pushed him to get a routine PSA test for prostate cancer. When the results came back abnormal, he went for a biopsy, which showed he had an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

“When you hear you have cancer, you’re scared to death, shocked and you turn white. Then, you’re just afraid of everything to come,” Bain said.

The couple wasn’t going to let cancer get in between them. Bain had surgery to remove the tumor and went almost two years without an issue. During that time, the retired contractor spent his days volunteering with his wife to restore historic buildings near Lake Tahoe. But last year, the cancer returned.

Barbara convinced Steve to go to the Us TOO prostate cancer support group in Modesto to have an open discussion on treatment options other than surgery. That’s where he met David Lowther, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with Peter K. Sien, MD, Inc., a 21st Century Oncology affiliate.

“Dr. Lowther was speaking to the support group and he answered questions so directly,” Bain said. “I was distrustful of radiation therapy, but after hearing him, I thought here was a doctor who understood and cared. He wants to beat cancer. His job is not just to treat you, but try to get rid of the disease.”

Bain underwent eight weeks of radiation therapy and was back to volunteering right after. He has nothing but praise for his treatment team.

“Dr. Lowther was worthy to do the very best job of anyone in our area,” he said. “If you can choose to do radiation therapy for your treatment, his care, his expertise and his machinery, is better than anywhere else in the area.”

Now after treatment, he and his wife remain part of the Us TOO prostate cancer support group with the goal of helping other men and women the way they helped him.

“To get through treatment, you need family, faith and quality medical care. There’s life, there’s hope and there’s better quality of life after cancer,” he says.
